The Study Group

Jeffery Tobias Winger
Jeff Winger in Season 1 is a charming, sarcastic ex-lawyer who’s forced to attend Greendale Community College after his fake degree gets exposed. He starts off super self-centered and manipulative, mostly trying to coast through life, but underneath all that, he’s kinda searching for connection (even if he won’t admit it yet). Basically, the reluctant leader who pretends not to care — but totally does.

Annie Edison
Annie Edison in Season 1 is an ambitious, optimistic, and tightly wound perfectionist. She’s super driven, a bit naive, and desperate to prove herself after a rough high school experience. Always eager to please and do things “by the book,” but her earnestness and heart make her one of the most caring members of the group.

Britta Perry
Britta Perry in Season 1 is a rebellious, idealistic wannabe activist who tries hard to be seen as enlightened and independent. She’s sarcastic, opinionated, and often insecure about being taken seriously, which leads her to overcompensate. Even though she can be awkward and self-righteous, she genuinely cares about her friends (even if she struggles to show it right).

Troy Barnes
Troy Barnes in Season 1 is a former high school football star trying to figure out who he is without his jock persona. At first, he acts cool and cocky, but as the season goes on, his goofy, fun-loving, and sweet side starts to shine — especially through his growing friendship with Abed. Deep down, he’s a good-hearted guy learning to embrace his true self.

Abed Nadir
Abed Nadir in Season 1 is a pop culture-obsessed, socially awkward but lovable guy who sees the world through the lens of movies and TV shows. He’s incredibly smart and observant, often using references to make sense of real-life situations. Though he struggles with emotional expression, he’s deeply loyal and becomes the heart of the group in his own unique way.

Shirley Bennett
Shirley Bennett in Season 1 is a kind, sassy, and motherly figure in the group, often trying to keep everyone grounded. She’s recently divorced and trying to rebuild her life, leaning on her Christian faith and strong personality. While sweet and caring, she also has a sharp wit and can be passive-aggressive when pushed — but ultimately, she wants a sense of
family and belonging.

Piercinald Anastasia Hawthorne
Pierce Hawthorne in Season 1 is an older, wealthy, and often inappropriate man who desperately wants to fit in with the younger study group. He’s clueless, arrogant, and says a lot of offensive things, but underneath all that, he’s lonely and craving connection. Though he tries to act like a mentor, he usually ends up causing chaos — sometimes on purpose, sometimes not.
